AL-QA'IDA IN THE ARABIAN PENINSULA

Al-Qa'ida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) is a regional affiliate of Al-Qaida (QDe.004) and an armed group operating primarily in the Arabian Peninsula, based in Yemen, with Saudi Arabia recorded as an alternative location for 2004–2006. The United Nations states it was formed in January 2009 when Al-Qaida in Yemen combined with Saudi Arabian Al-Qaida operatives, and that Ansar al-Shari'a was formed in early 2011 by AQAP, taking responsibility for multiple attacks in Yemen against government and civilian targets — which is why AQAP carries that name as an alias. It is listed as UN QDe.129 and is designated by five authorities: the UN (Al-Qaida sanctions), OFAC (SDGT and FTO), the UK (AQD0029, OFSI group 11044), the EU (TAQA) and Australia (DFAT, 1267 ISIL (Da'esh) and Al-Qaida), all with effect from 19 January 2010.
